Whatever Happened to Velcro ?
Testing Nostalgia; a retrospective.
I loved Velcro.
I understood her.
Many
did not and those who knew her knew her as a multitude of different
person'a. She herself was complicated and unsure of her exact nature.
Toward the end, she came into focus. InSilico changed her.
Velcro
was not from a high-tech world, to begin with. The floating platform
she grew up on, mean alien infested streets where you survived by theft,
combat or prostitution, prepared her. It was an eighties vision of the
future. She fled and landed InSilico, a nineties vision of the future.
Here she hooked, dealt drugs, anything to make ends meet; with help from
a tech cowboy she quit hooking for erotic dancing, dredlocked her hair,
relied heavily on the human nature of biological people and
increasingly feared the compassionless mind of machine people.
Velcro
encountered hybrids, cyborgs, clones; she did not to her knowledge meet any
designer biological androids because she was not in that economic and
social caste. As she dealt with her own developing self; the split
personality psychosis of the Little Girl, the Mother and the Survivor, she constantly fretted over defining Humanity, in a world where the biological type homo sapiens were a dying breed; Velcro knew she was of the last generation and was one of the few who actually cared. Techno-Sapien is upgrading them, bypassing them. From her many extreme experiences, Velcro regarded the future to be conquest by
an inhumane, self-obsessed, machine intelligence using everything around
it for its own long-term ends, the development of cold strategy; it was
her on-off reliance on chemical drugs to get her through which perhaps made this awareness appear extreme while at the same time refining her into, as she was
finding her feet at last, an empathic counselor; one with a lot of life experience. Something the machines did not possess and could never have; old fashioned human soul.
Many
of her friends relied on her for this, even poor Sa.. - she has forgotten
the girls name although having a major crush on her that lasted for some
while - the girl she accidentally drove crazy with home truths about
the reality of their situation, who had enough stress pressures of her
own and was too caught up in politic of love triangle, chasing Richard
Turner / Hughes the mystery man, her own personal savior. Comparisons never made
between friends, enemies, bitches, lovers and their difficult, similar
lives In Silico.
That
is when the mob caught up with her. They did not like her hooking on
their patch, under the noses of ISP (In Silico Police) and the mob. She
had to begin somewhere, sleeping rough on the streets of In Silico and
taking up with rogue hackers who disappeared assumed dead during
corporate espionage deals. Cyrgan was always her soft spot, his
preference for the Grid to sexual pleasures, his cold distance, was
human compared with the same equivalent of the machine entities who
alternatively served her or tried to kill her. In the end it was a
low-grade, low-tech scumbag, gangster Dave Black, who offed her by shooting her
in the guts and throwing her body off a ledge of the airborn city, never
to be seen again.
She
left her current boyfriend and drug partner heartbroken and in the cruel
care of cyberslut Coraline, a psychotic high-tech robot with a devious
human mind cloned from a corporate head, who as a brat teenager escaped
to InSilico to cause as much grief as possible, using the 'going legit'
rise to power to enable her to extend her abusive nature yet further and
with a more vice-like grip.
